Harvard ethicist Dr. Daniel Wikler will talk on "Research Ethics: Did We Misunderstand the Lessons of Nuremberg?" at CCNY, April 11.
A conference April 8 and a public lecture April 11 at The City College of New York will examine public health issues from ethical perspectives. The April 8 conference, “Contemporary Issues in Public Health: Historical and Ethical Perspectives,” features speakers from Columbia University, University of California – Berkeley and CCNY. Monday, April 11, Dr. Daniel Wikler, a Harvard University ethicist, will talk on “Research Ethics: Did We Misunderstand the Lessons of Nuremberg?”
Dr. Ronald Bayer, professor of sociomedical sciences in Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, is the keynote speaker for the April 8 conference, which runs from 9:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Room 5/101, North Academic Center. His topic will be, “Beyond Bioethics: Engaging the Moral Challenges of Public Health.”
An internationally recognized expert on ethical issues in AIDS and tuberculosis, Dr. Bayer serves as associate editor of the journal “Public Health Ethics” and is a consultant to the World Health Organization. His 1989 book, “Private Acts, Social Consequences: AIDS and the Politics of Public Health” was a “New York Times” Notable Book of the Year.

Dr. Andreas Killen, associate professor of history, The City College of New York: “Soul Vivisection: Hypnosis and the Weimar Debate about Medical Ethics.”
Dr. Amy Fairchild, associate professor and chair of sociomedical sciences, Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University: “The New Frontier of Disease Surveillance: Going Back to the Future with Diabetes and HIV.”
Dr. Jeffrey Blustein, Arthur Zitrin Professor of Bioethics and acting chair of Philosophy, The City College of New York: “Justice, Disadvantaged Communities, and Public Health.”
Dr. Wikler will speak at 2 p.m. Monday, April 11, in Room 95, Shepard Hall. He is the Mary B. Saltonstall Professor of Population Ethics in Harvard School of Public Health. He served as the first World Health Organization’s (WHO) “staff ethicist” and co-edited its “Casebook in Ethical Issues in International Health Research.” He continues to advise WHO on human subjects research issues.
