The Americas Film Festival New York, June 2 – 5, to honor the rich diversity of cultures, languages and stories of the Americas
The Americas Film Festival New York (TAFFNY), a new festival to showcase feature films, documentaries, shorts and animations that represent the rich diversity of cultures, languages and stories of the Americas, will be held June 2 – 5 at The City College of New York Center for Worker Education, 25 Broadway, Manhattan, and the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), at the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House, One Bowling Green.
The City College Division of Interdisciplinary Studies at the Center for Worker Education is organizing the event in collaboration with the City College Division of Humanities and the Arts and Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership as well as NMAI.
“A film festival is a natural extension of our efforts to give students a well-rounded academic experience,” said Dr. Juan Carlos Mercado, Dean of the Division of Interdisciplinary Studies and TAFFNY founder/chair. “This latest endeavor fits well with our vision of making the Center for Worker Education an exciting and cultural destination in Lower Manhattan for the general population, as well.”
TAFFNY will be organized into three film sections: “The Americas Panorama,” a program featuring award-winning films and documentaries; “The Schools Panorama,” a showcase honoring the work of some of the most important film schools of the region, and “The Americas Short Film Competition,” to promote the work of young and emerging directors. Besides the films, the festival will offer workshops, debates and lectures.
The theme for the initial short film competition will be films based on human rights and social issues. However, all creative topics will be accepted. Entry for the competition is free of charge. The deadline to enter is April 5.
NMAI, a lead sponsor, will host TAFFNY’s closing night ceremony, June 5, which will include the New York premiere of “Winter in the Blood.” The film, by Andrew and Alex Smith, is based on the novel by award-winning writer James Welch, a member of the Blackfoot nation.
Admission to the festival’s opening and closing night ceremonies is by invitation only. All other events are free and open to the public.
