U.S. News ranks City College among Best Regional Universities for 2017

City College remains one of the most ethnically diverse institutions

The City College of New York is among the top 100 Best Regional Universities in the North and a Top Public School in the North, according to U.S. News & World Report 2017 rankings. City College also continues to be one of the nation’s most ethnically diverse institutions, ranked #2 among regional universities in the north.

U.S. News factored in the proportion of minority students based on the 2015-2016 academic year student body to establish the diversity index, excluding international students. With 1.0 as the highest mark, the diversity index for City College is 0.74, making it one of the top schools where students “are most likely to encounter undergraduates from different ethnic groups.”

Overall, CCNY is ranked #26 among 48 Top Public Schools in the North and  #85 among 195 Regional Universities in the North. In the latter category, the college also scored highly in:

  • Least debt—most students are likely to graduate from City College with little to no debt.
  • Retention—the average first-year student retention rate at City College is 86%.
  • Alumni giving—City College has the second highest alumni giving rate at 20%.

U.S. News defines regional universities as those providing a full range of undergraduate majors and master's programs and a few doctoral programs. Regional universities are in four categories—North, South, Midwest, and West—because they generally attract students from the surrounding states.
