CCNY Radio’s $1.7m Facelift

Borough President Stringer, C. Virginia Fields & CCNY Pres. Paaswell to Attend Opening 

WHCR 90.3 FM, The City College of New York’s community radio station, unveils its new studios at CCNY 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 16 after a $1.7m facelift designed to boost service to listeners in upper Manhattan. 

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer and his predecessor C. Virginia Fields, whose offices helped fund work on the state-of-the-art facility, will be the guests of honor at the opening in CCNY’s North Academic Center (NAC) building, Room 1/513. Dr. Robert E. Paaswell, Interim President, City College, will welcome the dignitaries. 
 
Also at the opening, The Sugar Hill Quartet with Patience Higgins, a Harlem jazz group, will inaugurate WHCR’s new live performance studio. Both the opening ceremony and jazz performance will be webcast at www.whcr.org.

“This is a milestone in the history of the station and we are grateful to Presidents Stringer, Fields and Paaswell for making it possible,” said Angela Harden, WHCR General Manager. “A major voice in the community for over two decades, WHCR has just gotten louder.” 

Among the improvements are the expansion of studio space from 850 square feet to 2,000 and the addition of video streaming capabilities.  

“Our new facility will offer our programmers the opportunity to work in a technologically advanced environment that holds boundless possibilities,” said Ms. Harden, an adjunct professor in CCNY’s Media and Communication Arts Department.

Since 1986, WHCR has provided educational programming and entertainment to its listeners, while offering radio broadcast training to CCNY students and members of the community. 

Owned and operated by CCNY, it is licensed by the FCC as a non-commercial community broadcaster and is one of the few low power FM stations in New York City. CCNY is located at 160 Convent Avenue, Manhattan.
