The graduate programs in Secondary Spanish Education seek to provide secondary school teacher candidates with the expertise in the teaching of Spanish language, both as foreign language and a heritage language, and of Peninsular, Latin American and Latino literatures and cultures. While preparing for certification, candidates will learn to develop academically, linguistically and culturally enriching Spanish language education programs and to implement the necessary teaching practices related to these programs.
We offer five different graduate programs:
Spanish 7 - 12 for Spanish Majors (30 credits)
Candidates who have graduated with an undergraduate degree (B.A.) in Spanish comprised of a minimum of 30 upper-level credits in Spanish can apply for this program. It provides candidates who have a solid background in Spanish language, literature, and culture with the knowledge in education foundations and secondary Spanish education required for initial certification in Spanish.

Candidates who already hold initial certification in an area other than Spanish and demonstrate proficiency in Spanish may apply for this program. (Students with initial certification in an area other than Spanish will end up with professional certification in that area and initial certification in Spanish.) The program provides candidates with more specific courses in secondary Spanish Education required for initial certification in Spanish.
Prerequisites: B.A. with a major or minor in education; NYS initial certification in an area other than Spanish; liberal arts distribution requirements, including foreign language; 15 credits in advanced (300 level or above) undergraduate Spanish courses, including a grammar course and a composition course*; EDUC 20500 (Adolescent Learning and Development) or equivalent, including 15 hours of fieldwork**
* Candidates who have not met this requirement must take these courses before admission to the program. They must meet with Professor Salgado-Robles for suggestions.
** Candidates may satisfy the EDUC 20500 requirement by taking EDUC 7500A while enrolled in the program with permission of advisor.

Prerequisites: Master’s degree in Spanish or a related area; liberal arts distribution requirements; EDUC 7500A (Adolescent Learning and Development) or equivalent, including 15 hours of fieldwork*; SPED 5000K (Introduction to Inclusive Education) or equivalent, including 15 hours of fieldwork*
* Candidates may satisfy the EDUC 7500A and SPED 5000K requirements by taking these courses while enrolled in the program with permission of advisor.

Other Requirements:
- The Content Specialty Test (CST) in Spanish has to be taken and passed after completing 9 credits. This is a requirement in order to register in EDSE 7200I (Master's Project).
- To qualify for student teaching, candidates are required to pass either the Content Specialty Test (CST) in Spanish or the Education All Students (EAS) test AND to submit scores of the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI).
