Want to learn a new skill that could save a life?

The CCNY Outdoors Project is looking forward to our 5th ever Wilderness First Aid Training taking place from June 26th to 29th. This year, the training will include an exclusive sleep-away experience at the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) Stephen & Betsy Corman Harriman Outdoor Center. We welcome all CCNY students, faculty and staff to register for this opportunity. This training is beneficial to all outdoor enthusiasts, hikers, trip leaders and medical students, as well as those seeking to manage injuries and stabilize patients when help is delayed. On completion, a 2-year certification in Wilderness First Aid and CPR will be issued by Desert Mountain Medicine. If you have taken this course last-year, you are not eligible. Wilderness First Aid (WFA) Training is a hands-on practical course designed to prepare you to respond to medical emergencies when professional help is delayed or unavailable. Ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, leaders, educators, and anyone spending time in remote settings, this course focuses on decision-making, problem-solving, and real-world scenarios. The course covers a full range of situations, from scrapes and blisters to life-threatening emergencies

Topics include: Patient Assessment, Calling for Rescue, Basic Life Support, CPR, Spine Injuries, Environmental Medicine, Wilderness Wound Management, Musculoskeletal Injuries, and more. Participants will learn accident scene management and how to communicate effectively with an emergency rescue party. Successful completion of this course earns 2-year certifications in:

  • Wilderness First Aid
  • CPR
  • Wilderness Anaphylaxis Training

Certificates are issued through Desert Mountain Medicine.

Wilderness First Aid NYC is a provider of Desert Mountain Medicine curriculum. Your instructor, Ella Hartley, has been an outdoor educator since 2014, primarily working for Outward Bound as a mountaineering instructor, staff trainer and Emergency On-Call Response. She has over two decades of backcountry expedition and medical experience, certified and has instructed CCNY students, staff, and faculty on multiple occasions.

The CCNY Outdoors Project will arrange for roundtrip transportation from the CCNY campus to Harriman camp, departure time TBD. The bus ride is expected to take approximately 1 hour. During your stay at Harriman, all meals and lodging are included.

Everyone will have some free time to explore the area, hike or paddle. The camp has gear available for rental, such as hiking boots, rain jackets and more. Our team will provide you with an itinerary and packing list once your registration is confirmed.

Please Note: Participants will have shared bunk rooms (4 people per room) and a shared washroom located 2 minutes from the bunkhouse.
