Susan Besse received a Ph.D. from Yale University and is an Associate Professor in the History Department at City College and the Graduate Center.

She is a historian of Latin America, specializing in modern Brazil and gender history. Her book, Restructuring Patriarchy: The Modernization of Gender Inequality in Brazil (University of North Carolina Press, 1996), has been translated into Portuguese and published by the University of Sao Paulo Press (EDUSP). She continues to be interested in gender, race and state formation, which she has explored in a number of articles.

At City College, she has served as the Director of Women's Studies as well as a member of the Executive Committees of International Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and the History Department.
