Eladia Lopez transferred to the City College of New York in the fall of 2018. She received an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts from the Borough of Manhattan Community College in August of that year. Eladia is a dedicated wife and mother of four children as well as a new Mellon Mays Fellow. Currently, she is pursuing a BA/MA in History and has diverse interests, from ancient civilizations and revolutions to foreign relations and slavery. As a Hispanic with African and European heritage combined with her recent discovery of her grandfather’s employment as a “machetero,” (sugarcane cutter) as a young man in Puerto Rico, she has begun exploring the origins of sugarcane, its influence on slavery, and how it shaped the current social environments of the then “Sugar Islands.” She will graduate in 2021 and plans to join the professoriate thereafter to teach history.
