Shirley Chan was born and raised in NYC, Her interests include genetics, immunology, microbiology and biomedical science. She plans to pursue a Ph.D. in one of these fields, with the goal of becoming a professor and educating and inspiring students to pursue research. She currently works for Dr. Emerson at the Emerson Lab and for Dr. Alfano at the Institute of Ultrafast Spectroscopy and Lasers (IUSL), both at the City University of New York. Her research at IUSL focuses on biomedical optics and optical imaging. At the Emerson lab, her project seeks to understand the role of Deltex 4, a protein involved in notch signaling, which may affect retinal progenitor cell development. This research incorporates a mix of disciplines and useful skills, and has provided insight into what to expect in graduate-level training.
