November 2010 Science Events at The City College of New York

The City College of New York Division of Science announces 18 events for the month of November featuring scientists from prominent universities and research institutes from across the United States and Germany.  All are free and open to the public and held in the Marshak Science Building, unless otherwise noted.  Listings of event times, speakers, topics and room numbers follow.  

November 1, 12 noon: Salzberg Chemistry Seminar Series, Dr. Michael Mirkin, professor of chemistry, Queens College, “Charge-transfer processes at electrochemical nanointerfaces,” Room 1027.

November 1, 12:15 p.m.: Biology Colloquium, Dr. Orlando Scharer, associate professor of pharmacological sciences, Stony Brook University, “Regulation of endonuclease activity in human nucleotide excision repair and other DNA pathways,” Room 801.

November 3, 4 p.m.: Physics Colloquium, Dr. G. Lawrence Carr, photon sciences directorate, Brookhaven National Laboratory, “Dynamics in superconductors explored with accelerator-based sources of infrared and THz radiation,” Room 418N.

November 4, 3 p.m.: Special Interdisciplinary Lecture, Dr. Christian Griesinger, director, Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry, “Neurodegeneration: An NMR spectroscopic view,” Room 95, Shepard Hall.

November 8, 12 noon: Salzberg Chemistry Seminar Series, Dr. Tom Driver, assistant professor of chemistry, University of Illinois at Chicago, “Transition metal-catalyzed synthesis of N-heterocycles from azides – Relationship between mechanism and metal,” Room 1027.

November 8, 12:15 p.m.: Biology Colloquium, Dr. Songhai Shi, development biology lab head, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, topic to be announced, Room 801.

November 10, 12:15 p.m., Condensed Matter Seminar, Dr. Kyungwha Park, associate professor of physics, Virginia Tech, topic to be announced, Room 418N.

November 10, 4 p.m.: Physics Colloquium, Dr. Paul Whitford, postdoctoral fellow, Theoretical Biology and Biophysics Group, Los Alamos National Laboratory, “Revealing the energy landscapes of ribosome function,” Room 418N.

November 15, 12 noon: Salzberg Chemistry Seminar Series, Dr. Qingrong Huang, associate professor of food science, Rutgers University, “Design of healthy and palatable functional foods using nanotechnology,” Room 1027.

November 15, 12:15 p.m.: Biology Colloquium, Dr. Natalie Karouna-Renier, research ecologist, USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, topic to be announced, Room 801.

November 17, 12 noon: Biochem Seminar, Dr. Marco Ceruso, assistant professor of chemistry, The City College of New York, “Molecular mechanism of activation of EGFR: Insights from multiscale computational modeling,” Room 1027.

November 17, 4 p.m.: Physics Colloquium, Dr. Leonard Susskind, Felix Bloch Professor of Physics, Stanford University, topic to be announced, Room 418N.
