American Solar Energy Society inducts Grove School’s Nir Krakauer as 2026 Fellow

Nir Y. Krakauer, professor of civil engineering in The City College of New York’s Grove School of Engineering, is a 2026 Fellow of the American Solar Energy Society (ASES). The distinction denotes the highest grade of membership in the Society and recognition of exceptional professional achievement and service to the advancement of the ASES mission and vision. Krakauer and 17 other honorees – nine of them Fellows -- will be recognized at SOLAR 2026, ASES's 55th annual national conference in Austin, Texas, Oct. 19–21.

"Each year, this program shines a light on the people who are moving solar and renewable energy forward, in the lab, in industry, in policy, and in communities nationwide." said Carly Rixham, Executive Director of ASES. “The achievements we celebrate this year are a testament to the continuing success of solar technologies and to the viability of the ASES vision for a world equitably and sustainably transformed to 100% renewable energy.”

Krakauer’s research spans climate science, renewable energy, water resources, sustainable agriculture, and the application of machine learning to environmental and climate datasets. His work has included international projects focused on agricultural development and water management in Nepal, Pakistan, and other regions, as well as research supporting renewable energy grid integration, improved forecasting of extreme events, and sustainable resource management.

Additional interests include educating engineering students for ecological thinking and statistical tools for epidemiology and personalized medicine.

Krakauer holds a doctorate in geochemistry from the California Institute of Technology and was a NOAA Climate and Global Change Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California at Berkeley. An ASES Life Member, he has served as ASES Technical Divisions Chair from 2019 to 2024 and has continued on the Technical Review Committee for ASES conference planning.
