The City College of New York presents the nineteenth edition of Cityvisions, the annual showcase of new thesis films from its MFA Program in Film. This year, Cityvisions will be held at the Auditorium on Broadway, 1871 Broadway (between 61st and 62nd) in New York City, on Friday, June 2. The festival begins at 5:00 PM and ends with an award ceremony at 9 pm.
“The MFA program at the City College of New York is one of the most diverse and international film schools in the world, which makes Cityvisions a truly international film festival, showcasing innovative work by promising filmmakers from around the globe,” states MFA Program Co-Director Andrea Weiss.
The Cityvisions 2017 line-up of short films is a diverse mix of 6 documentaries and 6 fiction films. They include, to name just a few, the portrait of revolutionary artist Chaw Ei Then, exiled from her homeland of Myanmar; the story of a teenager in Taiwan facing the choice between his family’s religious beliefs and his own identity; a short documentary following a traditional Chinese matchmaker and the conflict between parents and children in China’s current society; and an intimate glimpse into the complexities of parental migration from Grenada and its impact on the lives of their children left behind.
The MFA Program in Film at the City College of New York is a small, boutique two-year program focusing on independent filmmaking. We are a culturally diverse filmmaking community, with ready access to the finest talent, locations, and production facilities of New York City. Unlike other film schools, we equally emphasize documentary and fiction filmmaking genres as vehicles for original storytelling that reflects the human experience.
Previous thesis films from CCNY’s MFA program have gone on to win, in Student Categories, four Oscars, eight Oscar nominations, as well as four Emmys. MFA films have also been invited to prestigious films festivals including Sundance, Berlin, Edinburgh, Moscow, Munich, Venice, and South By Southwest.
This year’s Cityvisions Film Festival jury is comprised of Flavio Alves, independent director/producer; Genevieve Villaflor, Director of Public Relations of Film Movement; and Greg Rhem, Director of Documentary Programming for HBO.
