Art exhibits, a symposium on “Women and Work in the Americas” and the “First Annual Celebration of Women in Arts and Culture Awards” are among the events taking place at The City College of New York to celebrate Women’s History Month, March 2012.
Several campus offices and academic programs have organized Women’s History Month events, including: the Women’s Studies program, the Office of Government and Community Affairs, the Division of Interdisciplinary Studies at the Center for Worker Education, the Department of Art and the Office of Student Life and Leadership Development, in concert with student organizations. Brief event descriptions follow.
February 27 – March 2, “Women and Work.” An exhibit of student photography over the past year that depicts women in contemporary society. Complements the “Women and Work in the Americas” symposium later in the month. Opening reception 5 – 7 p.m. Thursday, March 1, with talk by Professor of Art History Ruth Handy on “Women, Work and Photography.” CCNY Art Department Gallery. Compton-Goethals Hall.
March 8 – 30, “CCNY Women Make Art 2012.” Art works by CCNY women faculty, students and staff. Cohen Library Archives Gallery, fifth floor, North Academic Center.
March 9, “First Annual Celebration of Women in Arts and Culture Awards.” The City College pays tribute to seven outstanding women who have made invaluable contributions to the world of arts and culture. 7 p.m. Friday, March 9. Aaron Davis Hall.
March 9 – April 27, “Mothers, Daughters, Sisters and Scholars.” An art exhibit featuring artists from across the New York to honor the recipients of the “First Annual Celebration of Women in Arts and Culture Awards.” Curated by Myrah Brown Green. Opening reception 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 9. Aaron Davis Hall Gallery.
March 20 - “Resolution.” Screening of documentary by Swedish filmmaker Marika Grieshel on sexual violence in times of conflict and war, followed by Q&A with Ms. Grieshel and United National special representative Margot Wallstrom, whose work is chronicled in the film. 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 20, Aaron Davis Hall.
March 23, “Women & Work in the Americas: A symposium on gender, labor, immigration, and human rights.” Issues facing women workers across the Americas, including Wal-Mart workers in Chile, sex workers in Cuba and the Dominican Republic and immigrant women workers in the United States. 12 – 5 p.m. Friday, March 23, Center for Worker Education, seventh floor, 25 Broadway.
March 23 – April 28, “Femenina.” 20 works based on characters from world history and mythology by artist Andrea Arroyo that explore notions of gender, race, and identity. Subjects include Lilith, Cleopatra and Aphrodite.” Center for Worker Education, seventh floor, 25 Broadway. Opening reception, 6 – 8 p.m. Friday, March 23.
