CCNY, One Club Film Event December 1 To Promote Diversity In Advertising

The advertising profession is challenged to achieve a level of diversity that reflects the demographics of New York.  The City College of New York (CCNY) Media & Communication Arts Department and The One Club are teaming to hold a special event that looks to address this, especially on the creative side.

They will jointly screen the documentary “Art & Copy,” which portrays the work and wisdom of some of the most influential copywriters and directors of our time, at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, December 1, in CCNY’s Great Hall.  The showing, the film’s first screening at a college in New York, will be followed by a panel discussion / Q&A entitled “How Do I  Get a Foot in the Door?” led by advertising industry professionals from various backgrounds.

“The goal of this event is to expose students at CCNY, one of the most diverse colleges in the nation, to opportunities on the creative side of advertising for copywriters, art directors and other professionals,” said CCNY Professor of Advertising Nancy R. Tag.  CCNY offers the only undergraduate advertising/public relations major within CUNY; and with over 400 declared majors, it is a fertile source of future creative talent from groups currently underrepresented in advertising, she noted.

“The One Club is particularly pleased to screen this important film to the students at CCNY,” said its Chief Executive Officer, Mary Warlick.  “It is our goal to provide students with creative inspiration and hope that some may choose to pursue a career in advertising.”

“Art & Copy” is a powerful new film about advertising and inspiration.  Directed by Doug Pray, it reveals the work and wisdom of some of the most influential advertising creatives of our time, including George Lois, Mary Wells, Dan Wieden, Lee Clow and Hal Riney.  The persons profiled in the film were responsible for some of the most memorable campaigns in modern advertising, including “Just Do It” (Nike), “I Love NY” (New York State Tourism), “Where's the Beef?” (Wendy’s) and “Got Milk” (National Dairy Council).
