Matthew Zhou, a fourth-year B Arch student in Macaulay Honors College at The City College of New York’s Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture, is a recipient of the 2026 Hoffmann Scholarship. The scholarship was established by design firm Hoffmann Architects + Engineers, in collaboration with the Connecticut Architecture Foundation (CAF), to support students seeking degrees in architecture or engineering. It offers a paid summer internship in one of the firm’s three offices.
Zhou was an architectural intern in Hoffmann’s New York City office this past summer. Throughout his 12-week, paid internship, Zhou was able to work on a project from the pre-design phase through the construction phase. In addition to his paid internship, he also received a $2,500 scholarship.
His interests encompass architectural preservation and adaptive reuse, as well as community-centered historic restoration. As an intern, he was tasked with preparing a building envelope assessment report, which encouraged him to refine his technical writing; he was also an active participant in enclosure investigations and learned how to identify signs of distress and failure.
During his second year at the Spitzer School, he interned at the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) where he documented historic districts and landmark structures. His academic honors include the Duang Zhon Ai Xin Foundation Scholarship Award, the Tina Li Sheff and Donald Sheff Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Architecture, and the Spitzer School of Architecture Second-Year Project Design Award.
He was awarded the Student Merit Design Award from the Society of American Registered Architects (SARA) in New York this past June. He accepted Hoffmann’s offer of a second summer internship in 2027.
