The NOAA-CREST Center, based at The City College of New York (CCNY), is hosting the sixth annual Cooperative Research Symposium for NESDIS Cooperative Institutes, Tuesday, August 18, and Wednesday, August 19. The two-day event brings together representatives from Cooperative Institutes and individual schools supported by NOAA’s National Environmental Satellite, Data & Information Service (NESDIS) to share recent research and highlight the work of graduate students and post-docs.
Approximately 75 researchers from 10 institutions in seven states and Puerto Rico are expected to attend the symposium, whose theme is “Extracting the Maximum Information from Remote Sensing Observations.” Besides NOAA-CREST, represented Cooperative Institutes include the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, based at University of Wisconsin; Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere, based at Colorado State University; Cooperative Institute for Climate Studies, based at University of Maryland – College Park and North Carolina State University – Asheville, and the Cooperative Institute for Oceanographic Satellite Studies, based at Oregon State University – Corvallis.
The symposium provides an opportunity for scientists and students from the cooperative institutions and NOAA-CREST Center to discuss areas of mutual interest and promote innovative, cross-disciplinary research to improve understanding of the oceans, land and atmosphere. Its focus is to discuss various techniques for extracting the most information possible from remote sensing data, including statistical methods and understanding the physics behind satellite observations and algorithms.
The first day of the program will feature opening remarks and presentations by NOAA representatives and individual research presentations from Cooperative Institutes and NOAA-CREST researchers. Day two will feature poster presentations and oral research presentations by the research students, followed by an award ceremony for the best student poster and oral presentation.
About the NOAA-CREST Center
The Cooperative Remote Sensing Science and Technology Center (CREST) is a multidisciplinary center led by The City College of New York. The Center’s research and training focuses on all aspects of remote sensing including: sensor development, satellite remote sensing, ground-based field measurements, data processing and analysis, modeling, and forecasting.
Participating institutions include: Bowie State University; Bronx Community College; Columbia University; Hampton University; Lehman College; New York City College of Technology; University of Maryland – Baltimore County, and University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez. These institutions form a broad-based research team in remote sensing applied to earth, atmospheric, environmental, and marine sciences.
