Dr. Arnetha F. Ball, president of the American Educational Research Association, will be guest speaker at CCNY's Bortner Distinguished Speaker Series, March 5.
Dr. Nancy Carlsson-Paige, renowned early childhood education expert and professor emerita at Lesley University, will be the keynote speaker at a day-long conference for educators and parents at CCNY, March 10.
Two prominent educators, Dr. Arnetha F. Ball and Dr. Nancy Carlsson-Paige, will speak at The City College of New York March 5 and March 10, respectively, for an endowed lecture and to keynote a day-long conference.
Dr. Ball, president of the American Educational Research Association and a professor of education at Stanford University, is the guest speaker at the third annual Doyle and Alba Bortner Distinguished Speaker Series in Urban Education. Her talk, 5 p.m. Monday, March 5, in the Faculty Dining Room, is titled “Reform of Urban Teacher Education Programs: Expanding Upon a Model of Generative Change.”
On March 10, Dr. Carlsson-Paige, a renowned early childhood education expert and professor emerita at Lesley University in Cambridge, Mass., will be the keynote speaker for “In Defense of Childhood: Keeping the Joy of Learning Alive” a day-long conference for educators and parents 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. in The Great Hall of Shepard Hall.
Both events address preparing educators who can support increasingly diverse student populations in the most effective ways possible, a priority issue for CCNY’s School of Education, noted acting dean Doris Cintron. The conference will share effective practices and make recommendations for how to enhance the life chances of our youngest citizens, she added.
Conference speakers comprise representatives from academia and institutions that focus on childhood development and study. Besides CCNY, they include: 92nd Street Y, Alliance for Childhood, Bank Street College, Boston University, CUNY Graduate Center, Eastern Michigan University, Edward Zigler Center in Child Development and Social Policy, Gesell Institute, Kingsborough Community College, Lesley University, New York University, Rutgers University, Sarah Lawrence College, Seattle University, Touchstone Center for Children, University of Michigan and Wheaton College.
About Dr. Arnetha F. Ball
Dr. Arnetha F. Ball is a professor of education at Stanford University in the Curriculum Studies, Teacher Education, and Educational Linguistics Programs. In addition, she is president of the American Educational Research Association, director of the program in African and African American Studies at Stanford University and consultant to the Sizemore Initiative in Urban Education at Duquesne University. Winner of the 2009 AERA Palmer O. Johnson Award and author/co-editor of six books, Professor Ball is a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association and has served as a trustee of the Research Foundation of the National Council of Teachers of English.
About Dr. Nancy Carlsson-Paige
Dr. Nancy Carlsson-Paige is professor emerita at Lesley University, where she taught teachers for more than 30 years and was a founder of the University's Center for Peaceable Schools. An expert on early childhood education, she has written and spoken extensively about the impact of violence, especially in the media, on children’s lives and social development, and how children learn the skills for caring relationships and positive conflict resolution. Dr. Carlsson-Paige has authored five books and numerous articles on media violence, conflict resolution, and peaceable classrooms and schools. Her most recent book is “Taking Back Childhood: A Proven Roadmap for Raising Confident, Creative, Compassionate Kids” (Penguin, 2009). In addition, Dr. Carlsson-Paige is the mother of actor Matt Damon, who is also an education advocate.
