Google mines CCNY talent in search of best and brightest

Hand it to technological giant Google. It knows that talent doesn't just come from Ivy League schools.

When Career and Professional Development Institute staff members at The City College of New York attended a special Google information session last summer for CUNY career services professionals, they never anticipated Google's University Programs Specialist, Brendan Collins’ immediate response.   Shortly after the event, he would visit City College three times within a five-month period making an immediate presence on the CCNY campus.

Since the initial meeting, Google has been hard at work in collaborating with CPDI on developing a strong presence on campus to recruit CCNY's best and brightest computer and engineering majors and while some are in the works, other initiatives have already taken form.

Collins immediately provided specialized resume and interviewing workshops, and shared insight into the tech recruitment process, with a focus on what Google specifically looks for in a top candidate.

Collins has demonstrated his willingness to work closely with our staff and student organizations including the CCNY Chapter of the Association of Computing Machinery where Google hosted a luncheon and information session earlier this month. Google recently partnered with CPDI's Senior Associate Director of Diversity Recruitment and Employer Relations, Rhea Faniel to prepare CCNY's Region 1 National Society of Black Engineers Chapter for the upcoming National Conference in Detroit. Overall, Collins has created a “buzz and excitement among CCNY students” said Juan Vazquez, internship manager at CPDI.

If you missed the opportunity to attend an event with Google and meet Collins, don't despair, he will be a regular visitor at CCNY and CUNY.  Collins announced that he has been assigned as the official representative for CUNY and will focus on providing support, information and career preparation with an emphasis on recruiting students for positions at Google.
