CCNY civil engineer Charles J. Vörösmarty with the Hungarian Order of Merit Commander's Cross presented to him by that country's President, János Áder, for his accomplishments.
Charles J. Vörösmarty, professor of civil engineering in The City College of New York and one of the world’s foremost hydrologists, is the recipient of the Hungarian Order of Merit. Visiting Hungarian President János Áder presented the Commander’s Cross (civilian class), to Vörösmarty at their country’s Consulate General in Manhattan.
It is Hungary’s second highest honor and the citation read in part: “for promoting the international academic cooperation and the international reputation of Hungary, and in recognition of his research to resolve global sustainable water management issues.”
Vörösmarty, an Earth system scientist, is spearheading efforts to develop global-scale indicators of water stress, to develop and apply databases of reservoir construction worldwide and to analyze coastal zone risks associated with water diversion.
In Hungary, Vörösmarty is hailed for opening doors for numerous Hungarian students, lecturers and researchers in the United States. He’s facilitated access for researchers to cutting edge technology using space-remote sensing and computer systems in joint research projects. He also is working on regional, sustainable redevelopment planning efforts in western Hungary.
In addition to his title as professor in City College’s Grove School of Engineering, Vörösmarty is founding director of the CCNY-based CUNY Environmental Crossroads Initiative.
He is a descendant of the 19th century poet and dramatist Mihály Vörösmarty.
