Biochemistry major Md Shamiul Kabir
City College of New York Biochemistry major Md Shamiul Kabir is this year’s best oral presentation winner among premedical and medical students at the Student National Medical Association’s Region IX Research Education Conference.
The Bronx resident, a senior who arrived in the United States ten years ago from Bangladesh speaking no English, was one of four finalists in the category at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the East Bronx. His topic was entitled “Effects of Cladribine Derivatives and 5’ Azacytidine on Redifferentiation of SV40-transformed Human Epidermal Keratinocytes.” It addressed the possibility of applying a different chemotherapeutic agent using in vitro model of skin cancer cells.
SNMA’s Region IX includes student chapters from universities such as Columbia, Cornell, Rowan, Hofstra, Montclair State, Rochester, Fordham, SUNY Buffalo and Rutgers.
Mentored by Mark Steinberg and Mahesh Lakshman, both of City College’s Division of Science, Kabir graduates in February 2017. He plans a career in biochemistry research and medicine.
His recent awards at CCNY include the S Jay Levy Fellowship for Future Leaders (2015), the Division of Science’s Ephraim and Libby Banks Memorial Scholarship (2015) and the 2016 CCNY GHC Robert J. Serradilla Memorial Scholarship.
