Best-selling author Dr. Michio Kaku, Henry Semat Professor of Theoretical Physics at The City College of New York, will present the Spring 2011 Samuel Rudin Distinguished Visiting Scholars Lecture Monday, May 16.
Dr. Michio Kaku, Henry Semat Chair and Professor of Theoretical Physics at The City College of New York, has been in great demand around the country to speak on his best-selling book, “Physics of the Future.” He will have home court advantage, however, when he presents the Samuel Rudin Distinguished Visiting Scholars Lecture 5:30 p.m. Monday, May 16 in the Great Hall of Shepard Hall on the CCNY campus, 160 Convent Avenue, New York. The event is free and open to the public.
Professor Kaku is the co-founder of string field theory, a branch of string theory, and is continuing Albert Einstein’s research to unite the four fundamental forces of nature into one unified theory. He is also a best-selling author, futurist, television and radio personality and popularizer of science.
“While Michio Kaku is known to most of the world through his books and media appearances, thousands of City College students have been privileged to have him as a classroom teacher or mentor,” said CCNY President Lisa Staiano-Coico. “It is truly special to have one of our own deliver the Rudin Lecture, and there is no more fitting place for him to speak than our own Great Hall.”
Recent Rudin Lecture presenters include: former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo (2010), former “CBS Evening News” anchor Dan Rather (2009) and author Frank McCourt (2008).
“Physics of the Future” (Doubleday, 2011), Professor Kaku’s newest book, has spent five weeks on the “The New York Times” best sellers list; it currently is number 11 for hardcover non-fiction. His earlier popular science books include: “Physics of the Impossible” (Doubleday, 2008), “Parallel Worlds: A Journey Through Creation” (Doubleday, 2005) and “Einstein’s Cosmos” (W.W. Norton, 2004).
His scholarly work includes doctoral textbooks on string theory and quantum field theory and 70 journal articles covering such topics as superstring theory, supergravity, supersymmetry and hadronic physics.
Professor Kaku has hosted several television series including: “Sci Fi Science” on The Science Channel; “2057,” on The Discovery Channel; “Time and Visions of the Future,” on BBC, and “The Universe” on The History Channel. Leading mainstream media outlets frequently interview him for science-related stories, and he has appeared on “Late Night With David Letterman,” “The Colbert Report,” “Good Morning America” and other programs.
On radio, he hosts two weekly programs, “Science Fantastic,” carried on 90 stations via Talk Radio Network, and WBAI-FM’s “Explorations in Science.” In addition, he has more than 150,000 followers on Facebook.
About the Samuel Rudin Distinguished Visiting Scholars Lecture
The lecture is a component of The Samuel Rudin Distinguished Visiting Scholars Program, initiated in 1996. The program provides an opportunity for members of the College community to interact with outstanding scholars, business leaders and government officials.
Samuel Rudin, a civic and philanthropic leader in New York City, was a member of the Class of 1918 at The City College and went on to a prominent real estate career. The Samuel Rudin Distinguished Visiting Scholars Program is supported by a grant from the May and Samuel Rudin Family Foundation, Inc.
