This year's lecture also pays tribute to Jack Rudin.
A century after Samuel Rudin left The City College of New York to become an iconic real estate builder, owner and philanthropist, his grandson returns to CCNY March 15 to honor his towering legacy. “My Family, Our City, Celebrating the Legacy of Samuel Rudin,” is the title of William (Bill) Rudin’s Samuel Rudin Distinguished Visiting Scholar Lecture 5:30 p.m. in Shepard Hall, room 350.
The lecture includes a tribute to Samuel’s son Jack Rudin, who also attended City College and was an unwavering supporter of the institution. It is free and open to the public. Click here to RSVP.
A nephew of Jack, Bill is CEO & Co-Chairman of Rudin Management Company, overseeing a real estate portfolio that includes 16 office towers and 18 luxury apartment buildings.
He will speak about the role the Rudin family has played in the development of New York City’s economic, artistic and educational infrastructure.
After graduating from CCNY in 1918, Samuel founded Rudin Management Company, Inc. in 1925. Over the years, it became a leading builder, owner and manager of residential and commercial real estate in the City.
In addition to their philanthropy and commitment to civic affairs, the Rudins became stalwart backers of City College. Following in his father’s footsteps, Jack continued to develop New York real estate and serve the city.
The Rudins supported the city’s first five-borough marathon in 1976 and remain a major sponsor of the event.
Jack was a major contributor to CCNY and a long-standing board member of both the 21st Century Foundation, and the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership.
Established in 1996, one of Jack’s enduring legacies at CCNY is the Samuel Rudin Distinguished Visiting Scholars Program, of which the visiting scholars lecture is a component. The program provides an opportunity for members of the college community to interact with outstanding scholars, business leaders, and government officials, enriching the education experience on campus.
The Program is also intended to foster communication within the academic community of New York City.
Previous Rudin Scholars have included: former CBS News anchor Walter Cronkite; former Congresswoman Patricia S. Schroeder; author Walter Mosley, ’91MA; former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw; filmmaker Ric Burns; Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, and Nobel Prize-winning author Mo Yan.
