NOAA-CESSRST forum highlights research and educational collaborations

Coinciding with the celebration of 25 years of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Educational Partnership Program, The City College of New York will host the 12th NOAA EPP Biennial Education and Science Forum from July 20 to July 23. The Forum, which will take place on the CCNY campus, will bring together all components of EPP, including the four NOAA Cooperative Science Centers with more than 24 partner institutions.

These Fora serve as national platforms for students, faculty, scientists, and professionals to showcase collaborative research, share insights, and build connections across NOAA and its Cooperative Science Centers. They feature:

  • Technical sessions highlighting atmospheric, oceanic, and environmental research;
  • Student oral and poster presentations;
  • Professional development workshops and networking opportunities; and
  • Engagement with NOAA scientists, mentors, and EPP alumni.

The 2026 edition of this biennial forum is hosted by CCNY’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Center for Earth System Sciences and Remote Sensing Technologies (NOAA-CESSRST), which recruits, trains, and graduates post-secondary cohorts of students in NOAA-mission STEM and social science disciplines in preparation for careers in support of NOAA’s mission. Since its inception in 2001, the Center has been awarded more than $75 million in funding, which has supported more than 1,000 students (535 undergraduate, 327 graduate, and 210 doctoral), and 116 NOAA internships. This has resulted in 39 faculty hires, and more than 2,000 publications and presentations.

This year’s Forum includes technical sessions on topics such topics as “Advanced Weather and Atmospheric Modeling;” “Earth Observation, Remote Sensing, and Next-Generation Technology;” “Coastal Readiness, Intelligence, and Applied Science Integration;” and “Living Marine Resources and the Blue Economy.”

Other sessions will focus more on educators and student, with workshops such as “Strategies to Improve Learning Outcomes in Mentored Research Experiences” and “Interview Training and Best Practices to Land Your Opportunity.”

Fellows, scholars, alumni, faculty, NOAA professionals, and partners from across the centers and offices are invited to a structured engagement and collaboration session on Monday, July 20, the opening evening of the Forum. The session is designed to spark new working relationships across the academic–federal–private partnership that has defined the program for 25 years.

“The 25th anniversary of the NOAA Educational Partnership Program is a testament to the power of sustained investment in people, partnerships, and scientific excellence. As director of the NOAA EPP Cooperative Science Center for Earth System Sciences and Remote Sensing Technologies, I am proud to be part of a cooperative science center that has helped develop the next generation of scientists and engineers while advancing research that addresses some of our nation's most pressing environmental challenges,” said Fred Moshary, chair and professor of electrical engineering at the Grove School of Engineering. “The 12th Biennial NOAA Education and Science Forum not only celebrates a remarkable legacy of achievement but also reaffirms our shared commitment to innovation, collaboration, and expanding opportunities for future leaders in the NOAA mission enterprise.”

It is ranked #1 by the Harvard-based Opportunity Insights out of 369 selective public colleges in the United States on the overall mobility index. This measure reflects both access and outcomes, representing the likelihood that a student at CCNY can move up two or more income quintiles. Education research organization Degree Choices ranks CCNY #1 nationally among universities for economic return on investment. In addition, the Center for World University Rankings places CCNY in the top 2.2% of universities worldwide in terms of academic excellence. Labor analytics firm Lightcast puts at $3.7 billion CCNY’s annual economic impact on the regional economy (5 boroughs and 5 adjacent counties) and quantifies the “for dollar” return on investment to students, taxpayers, and society. At City College, more than 16,500 students pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in eight schools and divisions, driven by significant funded research, creativity, and scholarship. In 2023, CCNY launched its most expansive fundraising campaign ever. The campaign, titled “Doing Remarkable Things Together,” seeks to bring the College’s Foundation to more than $1 billion in total assets in support of the College's mission. By May 2026, more than $500 million had been raised. CCNY is as diverse, dynamic, and visionary as New York City itself. View CCNY Media Kit.
