Major Latin American Literature and Arts Journal Now a Publication of CCNY
On April 19, Review: Literature and Arts of the Americas, the preeminent US publication of contemporary Latin American and Caribbean writing in English and English translation, will launch at the City College of New York, marking the journal’s publication by Routledge in association with CCNY through its Department of Classical and Modern Languages & Literatures.
Edited by Daniel Shapiro, CCNY Distinguished Lecturer Classical and Modern Languages & Literatures, and guest edited by renowned scholar and translator Elizabeth Lowe, the latest issue focuses on the Brazilian Backlands in Literature and Arts.
"Review has recorded the history of Latin American literature and translation," said Shapiro. "By publishing work by and about these writers in a critical context, the publication has become a very important resource for students of Latin American literature in the U.S. and around the world."
Founded in 1968, Review first brought the work of Latin American writers such as Alejo Carpentier, Gabriel García Márquez, and Mario Vargas Llosa to critical attention in the United States, followed by numerous other important figures. Translators Edith Grossman, Gregory Rabassa, and Margaret Sayers Peden are among those who have contributed to Review. Issues of the magazine focus on specific countries, regions, or on more abstract themes such as urban voices, women’s writing, or Latin American/Latino performing arts. Review has regularly included selections of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction; book reviews of newly translated titles; profiles of visual artists; scholarly research articles and essays exploring currents in music and the performing arts.
