Through lectures, readings, screenings, and cultural sightseeing activities, students will learn about Afro-Brazilian culture, while at the same time reflecting on the complexities faced by Afro-Brazilians today. This part of the course is divided into four segments: Literature, music, cinema, and folklore. The second part of the course is dedicated to studying the basics of the Portuguese language in order to better understand Brazilian culture and its society. Classes will meet 4 days a week for 5 hours each day. Some of the classes will take place in the host university whereas others will be field trips to cultural centers and archaeological sites within the city of Rio. The class will also spend one weekend in a neighboring city on a research excursion. Students will be expected to write a daily journal to be turned in at the end of each week. At the end of the summer term, students will be expected to turn in a research paper. The topic of the research paper must be discussed and approved by the professor.
