CCNY Faculty Led Study Abroad Program - University of Johannesburg, South Africa
Dates: July 6 - 19, 2026 | Credits: 6
Johannesburg is an excellent destination for studying abroad! Vibrant, multicultural and dynamic, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) shares the pace and energy of cosmopolitan Johannesburg. Proudly South African, the university is alive down to its African roots, and well-prepared for its role in actualising the potential that higher education holds for the continent’s development. UJ has transformed into a diverse, inclusive, transformational and collegial institution, with a student population of over 50 000, of which more than 3000 are international students from 80 countries. This makes UJ one of the largest contact universities in South Africa (SA) from the 26 public universities that make up the higher education system.
The program offers an excellent opportunity to develop valuable research skills sought by employers, to gain overseas research experience, and to learn about on-the-ground struggles for social justice that can shed light on such struggles around the world, including in the United States.
Academics
Students will take two courses, Fieldwork and Urban Politics, taught by Nicholas Rush Smith, Director of the CCNY Master's Program in International Affairs, alongside University of Johannesburg students. In Fieldwork, they will learn research methods like interviews, observations, and life history, with a focus on ethics. In Urban Politics, students will use these skills to study social movements for justice in South Africa, through immersion in a Johannesburg settlement and visits to historical sites.
Eligibility
- Students should be graduate students in the CUNY system, although applications from advanced undergraduates (i.e. seniors) will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
