SSA Faculty-Led Service Learning Culture and Language Summer Program in Alicante, Spain

The program "Fostering Multicultural and Multilingual Awareness through Service-Learning in Alicante" aims to cultivate students' understanding of cultural and linguistic diversity through experiential learning. It combines service-learning opportunities with academic study, enabling students to engage with local communities in Alicante, Spain, while exploring key issues such as immigration, healthcare, and various educational, political, and social programs. Through direct involvement, students enhance their intercultural competence, broaden their awareness of multilingual settings, and critically reflect on the social and educational implications of multiculturalism.
Academics
- This program is led by Prof. Francisco Salgado-Robles
- SPANE 3500E or EDCE 25600 Language, Mind, and Society through Service-Learning
- Workshops on Spanish Society Today and Spanish for Professional Communication
- 25 hours of community work through service-learning projects in non-profit organizations
Cultural Activities
- Day study trip to Altea and Guadalest, including the Guadalest Castle and free time to explore in Altea
- Activities include: a walking tour of Alicante, guided visits to Santa Bárbara Castle, the Archaeology Museum, the Fine Arts Museum, and Spanish Civil War shelters, a cooking class with lunch, and leisure activities at the beach (e.g., volleyball, snorkeling, paddleboarding, surf lessons).

- Application fee: $300
- CCNY Tuition: 3 Credits ($305 or higher per credit)
- *Program Cost: $2,550.00
- Airfare: $900 - $1,000.00 (Estimated)
