Farewell to Professor Besse

We will Miss You, Prof. Besse!

"I write this final “letter from the director” with sincere gratitude for the opportunities I have had to work with—and to learn from—the extraordinary Fellows who have made the fellowship community a collegial and vibrant incubator of personal and intellectual growth as well as academic and professional success. You Fellows have touched me deeply, challenged me on many fronts, and enriched my life with friendships across generations and social boundaries. To you, I owe a great debt. Your grit, commitment, intelligence, and generosity give me hope for the future." —Susan Besse

Professor Besse (History) became Director of the City College Fellowship Program in November 1999 and won the reinstatement of the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program, spring/summer 2001. She has been a dynamic and powerful advocate for diversity in the academy and has created a program that is addressing the problem of underrepresentation in college and university faculties. We will miss her brilliance and her "all-things-are-possible" spirit.
