City College Fellow
Jamie O’Reilly is an English literature student at The City College of New York. Her research interests lie in literary theory and philosophy, particularly critical animal studies and posthumanism. For her undergraduate research project, she will pull from the works of Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Renee Girard, Michel Serres and Karl Steele in an attempt to expose the parasitical nature of the human-pet relationship, and to trace the history of the relationship of dogs and their human owners using mimetic theory. Her goal is to uncover the causal processes behind widespread pet, and especially dog, ownership. After graduation from City College, Jamie hopes to go on to obtain a PhD in English literature in order to teach at the college level and to continue research in critical animal studies.
