Anthony Laperuta is the new chief of the Department of Public Safety at CCNY.
Anthony Laperuta is the new chief of the Department of Public Safety at The City College of New York. Laperuta joined City College in 2012 as the assistant director and lieutenant of Public Safety where he established a unit for crime prevention and community relations as well as an investigation team.
“I am honored to serve the CCNY community as chief of Public Safety and remain committed to strengthening our efforts to ensure a safer campus for all,” said Laperuta.
He began as a campus peace officer at Bronx Community College in 1993. His career spans over three decades in campus public safety where he rose through the ranks and became a leader and expert of specialized trainings and investigations across multiple CUNY campuses.
“Anthony Laperuta comes to this position from a lifelong personal and familiar commitment to ensuring the security of the City College community. Through his decades of service, he has demonstrated personal pride and professional accomplishment in all aspects of this work—from responding to dangerous incidents, to embracing the outreach of community policing—he has been at the center of efforts to make City College a more secure and welcoming place,” said City College President Vincent Boudreau. “It is a pleasure to be able to name him to this position and a comfort to know that he'll be serving us in this capacity.”
As a first responder during the Sept. 11 attacks, Laperuta’s commitment to public safety has been shaped firsthand by some of the most challenging moments in New York City history.
“Mr. Laperuta brings a wealth of effective leadership to CCNY’s Public Safety team. His passion for the role, trust and respect for his team, and commitment to keeping the campus safe is unmatched,” said Scott Gurba, search committee chair and chief operating officer at City College. “We are thrilled to see him leading the charge.”
Laperuta is a certified New York State Police instructor in multiple disciplines and has trained thousands of law enforcement officers nationwide. He remains deeply engaged with evolving best practices to ensure safety is the top priority.
