The City College of New York’s M.F.A. in film graduate, Yvonne Ng, is the winner of this year’s Student Academy Awards ® competition for her short film, “Cloud Kumo.” As a winner, Ng’s short film is eligible to compete for the 2016 Oscars® in either the Documentary Short Subject, Animated Short Film or Live Action Short Film categories.
In addition, “Cloud Kumo,” has won the 59th CINE Golden Eagle Award for Student Narrative. It is presented by the Council on International Non-Theatrical Events.
“This award has opened many doors for me. CCNY really helped me in preparing for the outside world. The faculty are superb, and they are always there for us and teaching us all the skills and trade of the industry,” said Ng, who graduated this past June.
Out of 1,749 film entries globally, Ng was among the 17 that were chosen as winners of the 43rd Student Academy Awards®. Ng is in good company with past winners John Lasseter, Robert Zemeckis and Spike Lee.
Ng’s 15-minute thesis “Cloud Kumo” is about a survivor of the Hiroshima atomic bomb and her granddaughter. The film was shot in both New York and Hiroshima.
The idea for the film ignited when she represented Soka Gakkai International at the United Nations in 2014. “Cloud Kumo” is the first installment of a planned trilogy about nuclear power with the second film focusing on the Fukushima nuclear plant.
Gold, silver and bronze metals will be given at the awards ceremony on September 22 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. CCNY M.F.A. students Emilio Seri "Astral Migrant" and Jeff Huston "Running Condition" were semi-finalists.
