Two symposia presented by The City College of New York Department of Sociology, April 8 and April 15, will examine sociological and scientific perspectives on race.
The first symposium, 2 p.m. Friday, April 8, titled, “Race and Science: New Findings and Challenges,” focuses on questions of race and science and how increasingly scientific views of race challenge the sociological notions of race as “non scientific.”
The second meeting, “Race and Categorization: Changing Terrains,” 2 p.m. Friday, April 15, concentrates on the 2010 Census and the many questions it has raised about race.
Both symposia are free and open to the public. They take place in the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute library, Room 2/202 in the North Academic Center on the CCNY campus, located at 160 Convent Avenue, New York. The programs are made possible by a grant from the Office of CCNY President Lisa Staiano-Coico. Speakers for each event follow:
Friday, April 8 – “Race and Science: New Findings and Challenges”
Dr. Alondra Nelson, associate professor of sociology, Columbia University.
Dr. Ann Morning, assistant professor of sociology, New York University.
Dr. Gabriel Haslip-Viera, professor and chair of sociology, The City College of New York.
Friday, April 15 – “Race and Categorization: Changing Terrains”
Dr. Imani Perry, professor in the Center for African American Studies, Princeton University.
Dr. Stephen Steinberg, distinguished professor of sociology at Queens College and the CUNY Graduate Center.
Dr. Jungmiwha Bullock, national representative on the Decennial Census Advisory Council for the U.S. Bureau of the Census.
Angelo Falcon, president of the National Institute for Latino Policy.
