Chilean literary great Carlos Franz leads Cátedra Mario Vargas Llosa

Carlos Franz is one of the foremost Spanish-language writers in the world.  He is the 2016 winner of the Biennial Mario Vargas Llosa Award for his latest book, “Si te vieras con mis ojos,” which is deemed the best novel published in 2014-2016.

The Chilean national brings his formidable literary knowledge to The City College of New York as this year’s instructor in the Cátedra Vargas Llosa, the only such resource in the United States. Launched in 2014, the Cátedra is an international academic project honoring Nobel Prize laureate Mario Vargas Llosa.

The English translation of this year’s Cátedra theme is “Mario Vargas Llosa and the Poetics of Liberty." It runs from Oct. 18 – 21 and is presented in conjunction with City College’s Continuing and Professional Studies program. CCNY Distinguished Professor Raquel Chang-Rodríguez will also teach the seminar. Click here for registration information.

As part of the Cátedra, Franz will engage in a conversation with J. J. Armas Marcelo, winner of the 2014 Premio Francisco Umbral for his novel “Réquiem habanero por Fidel,” and Jaime Manrique, Distinguished Lecturer in City College’s Department of Classical and Modern Languages & Literatures and author. Manrique’s books include the acclaimed novels “Cervantes Street” and “Our Lives are the Rivers.”

Their talk, in The Rifkind Room 6/316, in CCNY’s North Academic Center on Oct. 18 is presented by The Simon H. Rifkind Center for the Humanities & the Arts and the Cervantes Institute of New York. It starts at 6:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. For more information, please call (212) 650-6731.
