Shveta Kakar, counsel to the Foundation for City College, has earned top recognition from Crain’s New York Business.
Shveta Kakar, a highly experienced practitioner of nonprofit law and counsel to the Foundation for City College, Inc., is a 2026 Crain’s New York Business Notable Women in Law honoree. The recognition is for her influence in New York’s business community.
Since 2017, Crain’s Notables has recognized over 5,000 outstanding leaders across industries. Honorees are selected through a peer nomination and editorial review process. Kakar and Crain’s other 2026 honorees will be highlighted in a special editorial report online at CrainsNewYork.com on Feb. 23, and in the print issue of Crain’s New York Business.
A partner at Fox Rothschild in Manhattan, Kakar counsels clients on the full range of nonprofit matters from incorporation, obtaining and maintaining exempt status, to governance, compliance, transactional matters, and the conduct of internal investigations and litigation on their behalf. She regularly conducts Board trainings, and advises clients on fiduciary duties, compliance with state and federal laws, lobbying and political activities, fiscal sponsorships, endowment administration and management, to internal controls and conflicts of interest.
Kakar also acts as principal outside counsel for a number of her nonprofit clients. Her duties include reviewing and drafting contracts, pledges, grant agreements and releases. She also coordinates their legal needs, from insurance, privacy, real estate and employment to intellectual property. Click here to read more.
“Working with Shveta has been a dream in terms of having a thoughtful, meticulous and generous legal partner,” said Dee Dee Mozeleski, executive director of the Foundation for City College. “She has been our guide through consolidations and expansions and continues to work closely with our team and our Foundation Board of Directors to ensure the legacy the Foundation will have on the future of City College.”
Kakar is the latest recipient of one of Crain’s Business’ top honors connected with CCNY. Mozeleski — whose other roles include senior vice president of CCNY’s Office of Institutional Advancement, Communications and External Relations (OIACER); and senior advisor to the College’s president – has been recognized twice for her outstanding work on various fronts. She was a 2025 Crain’s Notable in Philanthropy, and a 2023 Crain’s Notable in Advertising, Marketing & PR.
In 2022, Simone K. Tarver, associate executive director of marketing & communications, was named a Crain’s New York Business Notable in Advertising, Marketing and PR.
About The City College of New York

CCNY embraces its position at the forefront of social change. It is ranked #1 by the Harvard-based Opportunity Insights out of 369 selective public colleges in the United States on the overall mobility index. This measure reflects both access and outcomes, representing the likelihood that a student at CCNY can move up two or more income quintiles. Education research organization Degree Choices ranks CCNY #1 nationally among universities for economic return on investment. In addition, the Center for World University Rankings places CCNY in the top 1.8% of universities worldwide in terms of academic excellence. Labor analytics firm Lightcast puts at $3.2 billion CCNY’s annual economic impact on the regional economy (5 boroughs and 5 adjacent counties) and quantifies the “for dollar” return on investment to students, taxpayers, and society. At City College, more than 16,500 students pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in eight schools and divisions, driven by significant funded research, creativity, and scholarship. In 2023, CCNY launched its most expansive fundraising campaign ever. The campaign, titled “Doing Remarkable Things Together,” seeks to bring the College’s Foundation to more than $1 billion in total assets in support of the College's mission. CCNY is as diverse, dynamic, and visionary as New York City itself. View CCNY Media Kit.
