Lani Guinier, Derald Wing Sue Keynote Inclusive Excellence Symposium

All-day event hosted by City College Council for Inclusive Excellence Friday, April 11, in the Great Hall of Shepard Hall

The City College Council for Inclusive Excellence hosts a symposium on “Creating a Culture of Faculty Inclusive Excellence” 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 11, in the Great Hall of Shepard Hall on the City College campus. Harvard Law School Professor Lani Guinier and Dr. Derald Wing Sue, professor of psychology at Teachers College, Columbia University, are the keynote speakers.
 

The event will also feature:

  • A workshop on “Searching for Excellence and Diversity.”
  • Panels on “Best Practices in Mentoring a Diverse Faculty” and “Best Practices in Recruitment of a Diverse Faculty.”
  • A video presentation and discussion by The Cornell Interactive Theatre Ensemble entitled “It Depends on the Lens: Unconscious Bias in the Faculty Search Process,” which has been widely presented at colleges and universities nationally.

The City College Council for Inclusive Excellence explore issues relating to diversity in all segments of the campus community, with a special emphasis on faculty, and develops recommendations to make City College a more welcoming, nurturing, and integrative environment where multicultural, multiethnic and multiracial pluralism contribute to academic excellence and student success. Dr. Charles Watkins, professor of mechanical engineering, Grove School of Engineering, serves as chair.

About Lani Guinier
In 1998, Lani Guinier became the first woman of color to be appointed to a tenured professorship at Harvard Law School. Before joining the faculty at Harvard, she was a tenured professor for ten years at the University of Pennsylvania Law School.

During the 1980s, she headed NAACP Legal Defense Fund voting rights project and served in the Civil Rights Division during the Carter administration as special assistant to Assistant Attorney General Drew S. Days.

Ms. Guinier came to public attention when President Bill Clinton in 1993 nominated her to head the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice, only to have her name withdrawn without a confirmation hearing. She turned that incident into a powerful personal and political memoir, “Lift Every Voice: Turning a Civil Rights Setback into a New Vision of Social Justice” (1998).
A graduate of Radcliffe College of Harvard University and Yale Law School, Ms. Guinier has received numerous awards and is holds 11 honorary degrees.

About Derald Wing Sue
Dr. Derald Wing Sue is a professor of psychology at Teachers College, Columbia University. Born in Portland, Ore., Dr. Sue is the son of Chinese immigrants. Early childhood memories of being teased due to his ethnicity led to his fascination with human behavior. His deep interest and passion led him to becoming one of the most prominent voices in cross-cultural studies.

Dr. Sue has written several books, including “Microaggressions in Everyday Life: Race, Gender, and Sexual Orientation” (John Wiley & Sons, 2010) and “Counseling the Culturally Diverse: Theory and Practice” (John Wiley & Sons, 2013). Dr. Sue received his bachelor's degree from Oregon State University and PhD in counseling psychology from the University of Oregon. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors.
