Port Authority names Robert Paaswell to NYC bus terminal design jury

Dr. Robert E. Paaswell, Distinguished Professor in The City College of New York’s Grove School of Engineering, is one of eight experts selected to pick a winning design for a new Port Authority Bus Terminal.

The international panel of jurors, renowned for their expertise in fields such as transportation operations, urban planning, architecture and construction management, was announced by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. It has launched a design contest to replace its aging midtown Manhattan bus terminal, the busiest such facility in the world by volume of traffic.

A civil engineer, Paaswell is one of the nation’s foremost authorities on transportation operations, management and planning.

He is Director Emeritus of the City College-based University Transportation Research Center, a federally funded center that provides research and training to transportation professionals. Paaswell directed UTRC from 1990 until October 2009 when he left to serve as the Interim President of CCNY.

He previously served as executive director of the Chicago Transit Authority.

Paaswell’s co-jurors on the design selection panel are:

  • Gail Benjamin, retired New York City Council land use director;
  • Tilly Chang, San Francisco County Transportation Authority executive director;
  • Suzanne DiGeronimo, president, DiGeronimo Architects;
  • Robert Puentes, president and CEO, Eno Center for Transportation;
  • Dana Skelley, director, asset management, Transport for London, Surface Transport Division;
  • Martin Wachs, Professor Emeritus, civil and environmental engineering, UC-Berkeley;
  • Phillip Washington, Los Angeles Metro CEO.
