Hosts of Let Your Voice Be Heard, Sundays 11am-2pm on WHCR 90.3FM
On a clear day, listeners as far as Teaneck, NJ, can pick up WHCR-90.3FM, the only community radio station broadcasting from a public higher education institution in upper Manhattan. It’s been like that since The City College of New York-owned station first hit the airwaves in 1986 with a lot of jazz - literally.
As it celebrates its 30th anniversary, WHCR is a lot more than jazz now. Established to provide a voice for the Harlem community and beyond, while enhancing the learning experience of students, it broadcasts 24 hours a day to a potential 2.2 million listeners. That audience stretches from 72nd Street, river to river, to the South Bronx, parts of Queens and New Jersey.
“Our community programing focuses on the issues and needs of our listeners,” said general manager and program director,” Angela Harden. “Topics include housing, health and finance. “Off campus, WHCR co-hosts Harlem Emergency Preparedness Day in the fall and participates in Harlem Week in August.”
In recognition of the station’s jazz roots, the International Communications Association honored several WHCR DJs at its Annual International Jazz Day in Harlem. Tammy Shoji, Quadir Perez, Daa’iya Sunsai, Nelson Rhadhadmes, Lamon Fenner and Masud Tariq Towe received plaques.
