Achieving Affordable Housing in NYC: MPA Hosts Workshop with Policy Analysts from HPD

Students, faculty, and staff of the Colin Powell School and the broader CCNY community gathered at the MPA Program earlier this week for a workshop titled “Achieving Affordable Housing in NYC: Policy, Research, and Action”.

The workshop was facilitated by policy analysts from the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) and was designed for people interested in understanding the issue of housing affordability and exploring careers focused on housing issues.

In the workshop, the HPD team illustrated how city housing policy is crafted, drawing upon examples from HPD’s legislative work, policy research, and program development. Members of the audience drove the final part of the discussion with a range of insightful questions drawn from both personal experience and policy research.

This event was part of a growing partnership between HPD’s Division of Housing Policy and the MPA Program at CCNY. The partnership centers on a summer fellowship opportunity that provides a pipeline and a training ground for future housing leaders.

Now in its second cycle, the fellowship includes a paid internship at HPD that provides an opportunity to learn about the agency's organizational structure and work flows, gain an understanding of key terms and concepts that are central to HPD’s work, and contribute substantially to the agency's projects while receiving mentorship and career guidance. MPA students in good academic standing after their first semester can apply to the fellowship in a competitive selection process.

HPD is also committed to educating and connecting with the broader Colin Powell School and CCNY community, particularly the graduate and undergraduate students with interest in public policy and leadership, about housing issues in the city and the diverse career paths at HPD.
