1961: The Year of Freedom is a free, open-to-the-public photography exhibit hosted by the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute at the City College of New York (CCNY). It is organized by the Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Education and curated by Patricia Solano and Juan Miguel Perez. On Tuesday, September 21, 2021, this exhibit will be inaugurated by President of the Dominican Republic Luis Abinader, CCNY President Vincent Boudreau and U.S. Congressman Adriano Espaillat. President Abinader will deliver opening remarks.

The exhibit is educational in nature and centers around the year 1961, when dictator Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961) was taken down by the Dominican people. 1961 is now an official date in the Dominican Republic and celebrated among Dominicans everywhere, as the year of freedom. The exhibit will feature many never-before-seen photographs, chronologically depicting Dominican resistance during that period.

The exhibit will run from September 21, 2021 to November 30, 2021. As usual, the Chief Librarian and her team will organize visits with the NYC public schools and with professors teaching Dominican/Latino studies courses in CUNY and other colleges/universities.
