Requirements for Majors & Minors
Students are encouraged to meet with an advisor to get the most up-to-date information.
French or Italian Majors
Must complete 36 credits of advanced courses (300 and above) distributed as follows:
″ Three (3) language courses (9 cr)
″ Five (5) literature courses (15 cr)
″ Four (4) (additional) courses from language or literature (12 cr)
Spanish Majors (Literature and Linguistics Concentrations)
Must complete 36 credits of advanced courses (300 and above) distributed as follows:
″ 32100-Problems of Spanish Grammar (3 cr)
″ 32200-Practice in Writing (3 cr)
″ 32700-Introduction to Hispanic linguistics (required only for the Linguistics concentration) (3 cr)
Literature majors must take three of the following courses (including at least one from each cluster); for the Linguistics concentration, students must take two of the following courses (including one from each cluster)
Cluster 1
″ 35100-Studies in Spanish Literature I (3 cr)
″ 35200-Studies in Spanish Literature II (3 cr)
″ 45100-Spanish Civilization (3 cr)
Cluster 2
″ 35300-Studies in Sp. Am. Literature (3 cr)
″ 45201-Topics in Sp. Am. Civilization I (3 cr)
″ 45202-Topics in Sp. Am. Civilization II (3 cr)
Plus seven additional courses (21 cr)
Major in Two Romance Languages
Students majoring in two (2) Romance languages will be required to complete a minimum of twelve (12) advanced courses, including a minimum of six (6) in each language.
Among the six elective courses chosen in each language:
″ Two must be from language courses
″ Two must be from literature courses
″ Others courses may be selected from either language or literature.
Requirements for French and Italian minors
The prerequisite for a minor in French, Italian is the course 226, or four years of high-school French or Italian, or the equivalent as determined by a placement test. The prerequisite for Spanish minor is 226 or four years of high school Spanish or the equivalent as determined by a placement test. These courses do not count toward the 15 credits of required courses for the minor (see below). All minors must be approved by the Chair.
Students minoring in French or Italian are required to take any five (5) courses from group A (Language) or Group B (Literature) at the advanced level.
Requirements for Spanish minors
Literature
Students will be required to take: Problems of Spanish Grammar (32100) and Practice in Writing Spanish (32200), one survey course (SPAN 35100, SPAN 35200 or SPAN 35300); one course in Civilization and Culture (SPAN 45100, SPAN 45201 or SPAN 45202) and one course to be chosen from Group B (Literature) at the 40000 level.
Linguistics
Students will be required to take: Problems of Spanish Grammar (32100) and Practice in Writing Spanish (32200); and any three courses from the following: SPAN 32500, SPAN 32700, SPAN 37000, SPAN 46200, SPAN 46301, SPAN 46302.
