Eligible Courses for the Accelerated Master’s Degree in Middle School Science Education, Initial Certification Track

Examples of undergraduate courses in Science Learning & Public Engagement (SLPE) which can be taken in place of relevant graduate courses for the Master’s in Middle School Science Education (MSSE).

Up to 18 credits can be applied.

Option 1: Take required undergrad SLPE course SCI 12400 Principles of Physical Science (3 cr) in place of required graduate MSSE course SCIE 1404E Physical Science for Middle School Teachers 2 (4 cr).

Option 2: Take required undergrad SLPE course SCI 12500 Principles of Life Science (3 cr) in place of required graduate MSSE course SCIE 4102E Life Science for Middle School Teachers 2 (4 cr).

Option 3: Take required undergrad SLPE course SCI 12600 Principles of Environmental Science (3 cr) in place of elective graduate MSSE course SCIE 4104E Science in the Urban Environment (3 cr).

Option 4: Take required undergrad SLPE course SCIE 44000 Science Practice Across Disciplines (3 cr) in place of required graduate MSSE course SCIE 4103E Science Across Contexts (3 cr).

Option 5: Take required undergrad SLPE course EDSE 45103: Curriculum and Instruction in Science Education (4 cr)* in place of required graduate MSSE course EDSE 3900I Curriculum and Instruction in Science Education (4 cr).

Option 6: Take undergrad elective SLPE course EDSE 44300 Methods of Teaching Science (4 cr)^ in place of required graduate MSSE course EDSE 3101E Teaching Science in Middle Schools (4 cr).

Option 7: Take undergrad elective SLPE course EDSE 44301 Adolescent Learning of Science (1 cr)^ in place of required graduate MSSE course EDSE 3105E Adolescent Learning of Science (1 cr).

Option 8: Take undergrad elective SLPE course SPED 32000 Introduction to Inclusive Education (3 cr) in place of required graduate MSSE course SPED 5000K Introduction to Inclusive Education (3 cr).

* EDSE 45103 is a required course for SLPE. Students making the substitution of EDSE 3900I would complete the standard middle school-based field work requirements for those enrolled in the MSSE program. In consultation with the course instructor and the program advisor, additional observations related to non-classroom learning environments may be added.

^EDSE 44300 and EDSE 44301 are elective options for SLPE. Students selecting either or both of EDSE 3101E and EDSE 3105E would complete the standard middle school-based field work requirements for those enrolled in the MSSE program.
