PhD Research Opportunities

PhD students may contribute to fundamental and applied research involving multiphase flow, aerodynamics, heat transfer, plasma science, icing, shock-wave interactions, and experimental diagnostic development.
Basic qualifications
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a closely related field
- Strong foundation in fluid mechanics, heat transfer, thermodynamics, and engineering mathematics
- Interest in experimental research and quantitative data analysis
- Ability to communicate clearly and work collaboratively
- Commitment to laboratory safety and responsible research practices
Preferred experience
- Experimental fluid mechanics or thermal-fluid research
- High-speed imaging, PIV, Schlieren, shadowgraph, infrared imaging, ultrasound, or laser diagnostics
- Wind tunnels, shock tubes, plasma systems, icing experiments, or multiphase-flow facilities
- MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW, data acquisition, image processing, CAD, or instrumentation

Required qualifications
- PhD in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a closely related discipline completed before the appointment begins
- Strong research record in experimental fluid mechanics, heat transfer, aerodynamics, multiphase flow, plasma–fluid interaction, icing, or a related field
- Evidence of independent research and peer-reviewed publication
- Strong technical writing, presentation, and project-management skills
- Ability to collaborate with faculty, students, and external research partners
Preferred experience
- PIV, LDV, LIF, Schlieren, high-speed imaging, infrared thermography, or related diagnostics
- Design and operation of thermal-fluid experimental facilities

- Current CCNY undergraduate student in mechanical engineering or a related STEM program
- Good academic standing
- Interest in fluid mechanics, heat transfer, aerodynamics, experimentation, or data analysis
- Reliability, attention to detail, and willingness to complete required safety training
- Ability to make a consistent weekly commitment for at least one semester
Previous research experience is helpful but not required. Students from different backgrounds and levels of experience are encouraged to inquire.
