Jonathan Aguirre, member of 2013 cohort, receives fellowship to pursue PhD at Princeton University
Last summer, Jonathan Aguirre was one of 10 students selected to participate in the first cohort of the CCNY-Stanford Summer Research Program for students considering graduate school in the humanities. The Bronx resident, who received his MA in Spanish from City College in February, described it as an “amazing opportunity” that enabled him to conduct research with top scholars who became his mentors.
This fall, he will attend Princeton University on a fellowship to pursue a PhD in Spanish and Portuguese.
City College of New York Dean of Humanities and the Arts Eric Weitz today announced the next 10 students who will follow in Jonathan’s path as the second cohort of the CCNY-Stanford Summer Research Program. They will spend eight weeks on the Stanford University campus conducting research with a faculty mentor and participate in weekly seminars on the graduate school application process and research in the humanities.
Students in the program also receive a $3,000 stipend, on campus room and board and $600 to cover travel expenses. Names and brief profiles of the students follow:
Rachel Ansong is a senior earning a BA in English literature. Her research focuses on the identities of African women, particularly relating to race, gender, immigration and alienation.
Shaila Bora is a junior earning a BA in philosophy. Her research involves how and why particular attributes are ascribed to particular communities and the connection between that process and self-determination.
Anna Cahn is a graduate student pursuing an MA in art history. Her research explores the Bay Area Figurative art movement as a response to New York Abstract Expressionism.
Rene Cordero is a senior earning a BA/MA in history. His research examines how historical forces shape and drive expressions of masculinity in the Dominican Republic.
Tameekia Imani Cooper is a senior earning a BA in English. Her research examines urban immigrant communities across international boundaries.
Berta García Faet is a graduate student earning an MA in Spanish and Latin American literature. Her research analyzes Spanish post-war poetry and 20th Century Existentialism.
Betsy Marmol is a junior pursuing a BA/MA in history. Her research focuses on the domestic influences of Cold War policy, particularly regarding the period of détente.
Lorena Marron is a graduate student earning MAs in art history and museum studies. Her research examines the relationship between art and violence, with a focus on Latin America.
Joel Sati is a junior pursuing a degree in philosophy. His research focuses on the philosophical issues of immigration, citizenship and consent.
Xabier Fole Varela is a graduate student pursuing an MA in Spanish. His research focuses on the impact of literary journalism on Spanish literature and the transition to democracy.
