English Language Institute attracts international students

Chengjun Sun
English Language Institute graduate, Chengjun Sun, is now pursuing a master's degree in urban design at the Spitzer School of Architecture.

The English Language Institute at The City College of New York prepares international professionals and students for the challenges of American colleges. Students from up to 25 countries frequently journey to CCNY to study in the institute run by Continuing and Professional Studies.

With flexible five-week sessions and multiple start dates, ELI’s academic focus and five levels of instruction pave the way for admission into CCNY or any CUNY college. Upon passing level four, a student is eligible for a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) waiver.

After studying in the program for a year, Chengjun Sun was accepted into the Spitzer School of Architecture’s master’s program in urban design.  With two degrees under his belt and a career in urban planning in China, Sun wanted a change.

“ELI is amazing and beneficial, especially for people who continue to attend college. I feel more confident to speak, read and write English,” said Sun.

Full-time or part-time students gain skills in essay writing, presentation, debate, classroom discussion as well as an introduction to New York City’s history and culture through field trips. Math instruction is also provided for the CUNY assessment test.

Continuing and Professional Studies also offers a Paralegal Certificate Program, a HAZWOPER certification for the environmental consulting industry, and a Certified Billing & Coding Specialist course.
