WiNS Mentoring Program Co-Directory

Fatemeh Yavari is a second year Ph.D. student in Civil Engineering at the City University of New York, specializing in water resources and environmental engineering under the supervision of Dr. Naresh Devineni. She also serves as the Mentoring Program Co-Lead for the CCNY Women in Science (WinS), where she supports the development and empowerment of women in STEM fields. Building on her Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from Tarbiat Modares University, Iran, her academic journey has centered on urban flood damage assessment, specifically considering the effects of non-stationary rainfall patterns and urban development.

Her current research delves into urban flood forecasting and risk management, with a particular focus on mitigating flood risks in large metropolitan areas. Fatemeh’s academic excellence has earned her numerous awards and recognitions. In 2022, she was awarded the Grove School of Engineering Science Fellowship, and her master’s thesis was ranked among the top theses in Iran at the Prof. Hesabi competition. She has also received fellowships to present her research on flood engineering and management at prestigious conferences. These accolades reflect her innovative contributions to urban hydrology and flood risk assessment, where her work continues to make an impact.

Her research includes several peer-reviewed journal articles and conference presentations. Fatemeh's work on a novel framework for urban flood damage assessment was published in the Journal of Water Resources Management, and she is currently developing a machine-learning-based approach to quantify urban flash flood risks. Additionally, Fatemeh has contributed to academic literature by co-writing book chapters on steel structures and English language preparation for Iranian graduate exams. In addition to her research, Fatemeh has extensive experience in teaching and mentoring. She has been a teaching assistant for civil engineering courses at City College of New York and has mentored M.Sc. students during her time at Tarbiat Modares University, Iran. Her passion for education extends to freelance teaching, where she has taught engineering subjects like fluid mechanics and hydraulics. Fatemeh’s involvement in professional organizations such as the American Geophysical Union, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the CUNY CREST Institute further demonstrates her dedication to advancing the field of water engineering while supporting the next generation of women in STEM.
