CARE Team

The CARE (Communication, Action, Response, Evaluation) team is a multi-disciplinary group whose purpose is to promote campus safety as well as student, faculty and staff success.

The focus of CCNY's CARE Team is care and concern for students who may be in distress.  The CARE Team encourages students, staff and faculty to report signs of:

• Medical health concerns
• Substance use
• Emotional, behavioral or psychiatric health concerns
• Disruptive, harmful or violent behavior

If you observe any of the following, please submit the CARE Team Reporting Form to get the student help and support:

• Making disturbing comments in conversation, email, letters, social media postings or papers
• Intimidating or harassing others including making disturbing or threatening phone calls, text messages, emails, social media postings, etc.
• Demonstrating disruptive or bizarre behavior on campus (including in classrooms)
• Psychological or behavioral concerns – depression, severe anxiety/panic, anger outbursts
• Abusing alcohol or drugs
• Disengaging and/or isolating themselves
• Suggesting (in verbal or written form) an intention to harm self, including self-mutilation and expression of suicidal thoughts or actions
• Suggesting (in verbal or written form) an intention to harm others
• Engaging in, or is the victim of any kind of assault including sexual misconduct

Any member of the CCNY community may refer a student of concern to the CARE Team.  Your confidential report to CCNY's CARE Team can make a difference:

What does the Care Team need to know? (the more information we have, the better we can assist our students)

• Student name and ID number (if known)
• Your name, position and complete contact information
• Brief factual description of the incident or behavior (including where and when the incident or behavior occurred)
• Names and contact information of witnesses (include all emails or other information you have)
• Direct quotes whenever possible
• Always save voice recordings, text messages and emails on the device that received them

The CARE Team includes representatives from the following CCNY departments:

• Student Affairs
• Diversity and Compliance
• Public Safety
• Residence Life
• Community Standards
• REACH Services (Resources, Education, AccessAbility, Counseling and Health)
• Faculty Representative

The primary goals of the CARE Team are:

• To balance the individual needs of students and those of the campus community
• Mitigate risk in an effort to keep the CCNY community healthy and safe
• Implement timely, effective and coordinated interventions
• Coordinate support services utilizing both on campus and community resources
• Engage in coordinated follow up and re-assessments
• Provide the CCNY community with an easily-accessible process for reporting concerns

Please Note:  the CARE Team is not meant to take the place of standard classroom management techniques utilized by faculty. Implementation of this team does not alter any existing discipline policies. Rather, the CARE Team centralizes the reporting of concerning student behavior, encourages early intervention, and ensures follow-up on relevant cases
