Sustained Dialogue at CCNY

Sustained dialogue is a deliberate, patented, and repeatable peace process employed to transform difficult relationships and move toward resolution in conflicts between groups. Across the globe, the Sustained Dialogue Institute supports individuals in transforming conflictual relationships and designing change processes. We define dialogue as “listening deeply enough to be changed by what you learn.” Learn more about the Sustained Dialogue Institute.

City College will be offering exciting opportunities for students who are interested in participating in complex dialogue circles on topics such as safety, equity, inclusion, conflict, and identity. There will be various opportunities for students to participate in face-to-face dialogue with faculty, staff and administration trained to facilitate sustained dialogue. These sessions aim to facilitate sensitive and meaningful conversations among peers throughout the academic year. Sessions require a multi-week commitment (weekly and hourly commitments vary, view details below). Participants are expected to make every effort to attend all scheduled sessions.

Session Topic: "Us vs. Them" (Click Here to Register)

Dates & Times: September 24th, 2024 - December 3rd, 2024. Every other Tuesday from 12:30pm - 2pm.

Description: In these sessions, participants will explore the dynamics of how we perceive differences and divisions between groups, and how these perceptions shape our interactions and communities. Through the principles of Sustained Dialogue, we’ll examine the roots of these divisions and discuss ways to move beyond them to foster understanding and collaboration. These dialogues sessions will empower participants to reflect on their own experiences and build bridges across perceived boundaries.

Session Topic: Safety (Click Here to Register)

Dates & Times: 10/1, 10/15, 10/29, 11/12, and 12/10/2024 from 4pm - 6pm

Description: In these sessions, participants will discuss what it means to create and maintain safe spaces within our campus community. Using open dialogue, we’ll explore personal and collective experiences of safety, both physical and emotional, and how we can support one another in fostering a secure environment. These conversations aim to empower students to take an active role in building a culture of safety and trust.
