From August 30th to September 20th, six films and a digital album will stream freely to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Attica uprising, and to reflect on ongoing resistance efforts against prison slavery and police terror.  On Sept 8th and 13th, there will also be talks with filmmakers and activists. Presented by Maysles Documentary Center with Third World Newsreel, in collaboration with the Documentary Forum at CCNY, Attica is All of Us and The Freedom Archives.

50 years ago - in July 1971, incarcerated men at the Attica prison in upstate NY presented a list of demands for changes in medical care, visitations and more.  They were met with violence.  Tensions escalated and resulted in hostage taking and attempted negotiations by the incarcerated organizers.  Then on September 13th—later known as “Bloody Monday”— State Troopers fired indiscriminately, killing 43 prisoners and guards. One organizer later described the incident as “premeditated murder.”
