The 100th anniversary of Black History Month is being celebrated with a calendar of events led by the CCNY Black Studies Department and open to the public.
An exhilarating and wide-ranging variety of events are available almost daily in the month of February to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Black History Month at The City College of New York led by the Black Studies Department. The following events are open to the public.
The Harlem Chamber Players, in partnership with the Leonard Davis Center for the Performing Arts at City College, and in association with the Harlem School of the Arts presents the 18th Annual Black History Month Celebration “American Landscapes” on Thursday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. at Aaron Davis Hall, 129 Convent Avenue, New York, NY 10027. The concert is part of the nationwide “America 250” celebration. Free with registration.
The AACCNY Black Alumni Group has organized a trip to see the Harlem Globetrotters: 100 Years of Legacy on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 3 p.m. at the Barclays Center, Brooklyn. Tickets are $75 and limited to first come, first serve.
Attend a screening of the latest documentary "The Inquisitor" from director/producer Angela Tucker and coproducers Trevite Willis and Moira Griffin on Wed., Feb. 18th at 6 p.m. in Shepard Hall, room 291. The film explores the life and legacy of Barbara Jordan, the groundbreaking Texas congresswoman whose sharp intellect and moral clarity transformed U.S. politics. From Nixon’s impeachment to civil rights battles, Jordan demanded accountability all while facing personal struggles. After the film, Black Studies Department Chair Jervette Ward will lead a discussion with the filmmakers. Refreshments will be served. Reserve your space. A lecture, “Black Empowerment: London’s Legacy, and the Fight for Racial Justice in the UK and Beyond,” is hosted by UMAAN and BSU on Monday, Feb. 23, at 6 p.m. in the NAC Ballroom. The lecture explores London as a central site of Black empowerment, resistance, and political organizing, and examines how Black communities in Britain have challenged racism, empire, and state power while shaping global movements for justice.
Public events held in The Lookout, a community space in Shepard 278 dedicated to supporting Black Studies students and the wider CCNY community, include:
- The Black Studies Department invites students to volunteer in KIKI Part 2 on Friday, Feb. 6, from 2 p.m to 5 p.m. Welcome the new semester, settle in and decorate the Department.
- The Black Studies Department hosts a lecture by Dr. Emmanuel Lachaud on Labor History on Monday, Feb. 9 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.
- The Zahn Innovation Center, CCNY holds a panel discussion of Black Zahn alumni called “The Road From Student to Founder" on Tuesday, Feb. 10 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.
- The Lookout and the Black Studies Space Party featuring the “Building Black History Month Bulletin Board” on Thursday, Feb. 26 from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. The Black Studies Department is back and here to stay! Join in and celebrate the achievement that is the Black Studies Department and the hours of work that went into re-establishing it at CCNY. Also, the winner of the Lookout Floor Mural Contest for The Black Studies Department will be announced.
