CCNY students triumph at CSTEP Conference

Three students from The City College of New York’s CCAPP program took first place in their research categories at this year’s 27th Annual CSTEP Conference at upstate Bolton Landing. The Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program aims to increase the number of historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students pursuing careers in STEM-related fields.

The theme of the conference, "Journeys Beyond Excellence," encompasses the mission and purpose of CSTEP, which is to provide guidance for students on their journey of academic excellence while preparing for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics or the licensed professions. It allows students to showcase their research through poster and oral presentations. In addition to there were academic, professional and personal development workshops.

The three first prize winners, their majors and presentations were:

  • Senior Dean Cuadrado, Biology, poster, Material Science & Nanotechnology, “Regeneration of a Pediatric Alveolar Cleft Model using 3D Printed Bioceramic Scaffolds and Osteogenic Agents: Comparison of Dipyridamole and rhBMP-2”;
  • Senior Jasmin Morales, Biotechnology and Jewish Studies, poster, Medicine I, “BLMP-1/Blimp1 regulation of apl-1 in Caenorhabditis elegans”;
  •  Senior Mathiu Perez- Rodriguez, Biochemistry, oral, Natural Science 3, “Antibacterial Activity-Guided Fractionation of Potato Wound Tissue Extract.”

Other participants include Senior Karla Cardenas, a Biology major, who presented a poster for the Cell/Micro/Molecular Biology & Virology II category entitled “Molecular analysis of cell envelope integrity in Escherichia coli,” and Senior Hadriana Leveque, a Biology major, who presented a poster for the Medicine I category entitled “Smooth Muscle Cells as a Niche to the Airway Epithelium.”

CCNY also had two first place winners in 2018, three first place winners at the 2017 and 2016 conference and five in 2015.
